Macworld Expo Keynote Transcript

Welcome to the MPG Macworld Keynote entry. This entry will be updated starting at 8AM Pacific time with details and again updated when keynote starts until it ends. We encourage you to our our XML (https://mypersonalgetaway.com/index.xml) and iChat (iChat type Command+G and type "MPG") to get the updates as well. It will save bandwidth. There will not be cell phone notification. We will be posting audio of the keynote and very rough pictures thirty minutes after keynote ends. A better audio and much better looking photos will be posted later.

Let the Keynote Begin...
Notes in ( )'s is personal thoughts

5AM: Arrived at Apple store and picked up our group of writers and friends of the site. From there went and got 3 dozen doughnuts. We arrived put our things down and passed out the pastries to t hose waiting out in the cold and rain.
6-8AM: Trying to figure out where we we were going and why we are in a room called "overflow" although arrived at 5AM.
8-8:30: 8AM: Received word from IDG staff, "IDG over issued press passes so Apple selectively RSVPed certain media and the rest are supposed to go to an "overfill" room usually reserved for those that arrive late. The feed is live and going to two large screens but for those taking pictures, live audio or video; they are out of luck. As I went to the restroom, I even saw a Wall Street Journal reporter denied a ticket to keynote.
9AM: Music has begun.... Press speaker has started announcing final call for those entering overflow room and hall
9:05: Video Stream Started Waiting for Steve
9:05: Video feed showing the keynote hall and media that actually got let in.
9:10: Showing copyright laws for press on screen. Any moment now
9:11: Steve walks on stage standing ovation. Wearing black turtleneck and jeans.
Stage has instruments similar to last year's stage.
9:12: Apple Retail: 1st store (3.5 years ago) 101 Apple Retail stores around the world. Retail Stores hold over 1 million visitors a week. 20 Macworlds equivalent a week. London: Largest store to date.
9:13: iMac Update: Launched in September. (Most popular mac: iMac)
9:15: Mac OS 10. 12,000 applications. 14 million active users. "What's Next?"
9:17: Tiger will ship first half of this year. Over 200 new features.
9:21: Demoing Spotlight (we thought he was not previewing).
9:23: Steve has a bug. Tiger just froze up and he had to switch to a new computer. (similar problem happened with Microsoft at CSS next week.)
9:24: Demoing Finder. Smart folders in Finder using Spotlight.
9:25: Demoing System Preferences. Spotlight integrated in System preferences. Showing new feature of iTunes Album Art used as a screensaver. *demo of spotlight over*
9:26: Mail. Spotlight integrated. People get a lot of pictures in their mail and they have learned how to integrate slideshows into mail. Slideshow mode uses "coreimage" to resize photos, look in gallery mode and add to iPhoto with an amazing interface effect.
*Computer keeps prompting to use certain apps with certain files. Signs the backup computer was not ready to be used after the other computer froze*
9:29: Quicktime 7. QT6 has 330 million copies downloaded. 98% of the downloads are to Windows users.
9:30" What's new? Live resizing, HD playback, complete MPEG-4 compliance, and more. The biggest thing about QT7 is "H.264".
9:31: Demo of H.264. Showing auto resizing without loss of quality. On-screen controls of QT7 very transparent. CD-Quality sound and can scale from small phones to High Definition sets.
9:33: Dashboard...
9:32: Expose was for finding windows fast. When you want other info, to get in, find it and get out. Dashboard is the answer. Calculator, Address book, Calendar, Stickies, Controller for iTunes, World Clock, and converter (feet, meters, power, speed), Dictionary and Thesaurus. Stock tracker *MS was down a point and apple was up a point*, Translation, Yellow Pages and Weather, flight tracker. These are just built-in widgets.
9:34: Demoing Dashboard... Showing new features (apple stock updates at 1 dollar down. Steve, "we have a lot more things to come today that will go up". Steve making jokes left and right) playing with the US dollar to other currencies. Poking fun at stocks and the flight tracker not finding flights.
9:37: Showing weather and clock. Both have moving UI elements including weather patterns and clock changes darker at night. EBay tracker keeps track of current bids.
9:40: iChat 3. Up to 10 people at a time Audio Chat. Up to 4 video chats at a time using H.264 compression.
9:42: iChat 3 demo: Chatting with Danika Cleary (she is hottest Apple Employee).
add she is in , Invites Phil Schiller.
9:41: Invites Scott Forstall as well. Danika in Paris, Phil in a room and Scott in a cafe. Steve switches to full screen.

9:42: Final Cut Pro HD is the best HD editor. That is not enough so we are adding "Final Cut Express HD".
Powerful HDV and DV editing. LiveType for animated titling. Soundtrack included and works with Motion. Costs $299 and will be available in February. $99 dollar upgrade price.
Steve, "2005 is going to be the year of HD DV editing."
9:44: iLife... "Today I am pleased to announce iLife'05" *extremely ugly box!!!!*
9:45: iPhoto: Much better organizing and searching. More photo formats. Far more powerful editing. Advanced Slideshows. All new books and book designs. Even easier to use.
Demo...
Added project folders (grouping)
Instantly find things via a search box. Added calendar view.
iPhoto stores movies as well. the new iPhoto supports Camera Raw.
9:46: Editing in iPhoto... pictures in library are shown on top of editing mode. Added iPhoto dashboard widget. B and W, exposure, histrogram, sharpness, straighten and more works with Camera Raw too.
Advanced Slideshows: Set timing and transitions different for each photo w/ ken burns effect too.
Books demo.... Demoing Search, Calendar, MPEG-4 video playback opens QT7 when clicked.
9:53: Making books. Click a simple book icon. Many more themes (about 20).
9:55: Layout is amazing and looks more like a scrapbook. You can switch to edit mode then return to book mode.
iPhoto demo concludes
9:55: Steve's jeans are very worn and looks like from goodwill.
9:55: .19 cents a print for photos. (half price from before). All books look very professional.
Adding Softcover books and pocketbook (3.5x2.5) All books are 20 pages minimum w/ 4 book sizes. 29.99-3.99. Albums are available worldwide.
9:58: iMovie: Much faster, non destructive editing, MPEG-4 video, more transition and effects, magic iMovie (select what you want and how you want it and using scripts it makes the movie for you).
Biggest feature of new iMovie?
"this is the year of HD so iMovie now edits High Def video.9:59: Demoing iMovie....
9:59: Demoing iMovie HD quality is amazing. Clean, crisp and all I can say is "wow"
*Steve is firing the guy that setup the crashed computer system as the demo runs*
10:01: Demo of iMovie ends... Obviously there is more to talk about (iDVD has new icon) and garageband should be amazing.
10:03: Doing a plug for Sony's new HDV camcorder. $3499 first prosumer HD camcorder. Steve, "best video company in the world."
10:04: Welcoming President of Sony, Kunitake Ando, on stage
Steve is recording sony president with camera and Sony prez is kissing Steve's butt severely we hope he gets on with his speech....
10:07: Steve and sony president speaking, "I spoke too long", he says. Big screen is showing closeup on steve's crotch, no joke. they shake hands and prez of Sony leaves.
"One more thing, one more thing" the man says.
He is plugging sony Products before he leaves
10:08: iDVD : 15 amazing new themes (animated drop zones), one step DVD creation from camcorder to DVD and supporting all DVD formats. Real time menu creation w/ great transitions, integrated movies as clickable buttons as well as buttons and photos.
[i]Editor: We think apple should sell iDVD theme paks instead of adding 20 themes and calling it a new version.

10:14: Now Garageband...
New JamPack: Orchestra Instruments.
10:15: Newest of iLife Apps. Been a huge success. Adding 8 track simultaneous recording, real-time music notations, pitch and timing fixing, recorded tracks are flexible, make your own loops and a vocal fixation.
John Mayer on Stage to help demo
Editor: Guess steve could not book anyone else. John Mayer twice in a row.
John mayer going to demonstrate music notation...
Keys outline as John keys on the keyboard with a tempo *tick tick tick* to help keep rythym. John Mayer states in a melody, "I didn't win any grammys for playing piano."
10:16: Multi-Track recording.... John mayer grabs guitar and starts playing song, "Neon" off an older album recording in multiple tracks

10:18: Steve stops there after first chorus...

10:19: Singling out certain tracks showing flexibility of multi-track recording and John Mayer leaves stage taking guitar with him
10:20 AM
"So this is the new Garageband..."
10:20: This is the new iLife and they don't just work but work together. All of them are integrated to work with each other in real time and seamlessly in iLife '05. It is priced at 79 dollars on January 22nd.
Free on all new Macs.
10:21: Announcing a new product, "iWork" *again an ugly box*
Keynote 2: 10 new themes, animated text, animated builds, self running kiosk builds...
Enhanced presentation tools
10:23: Showing new themes and animations are built in and even graphs are all automated...
Themes: Watercolor, Scrapbook, and more.
All animations, graphics, and transitions are built in to work well with each theme
Works with Appleworks, Powerpoint, PDF and more
10:25: Announcing Pages....
Word processor supports, advanced typography, columns, styles, footnotes, table of contents and 40 Apple designed templates.
*Icon for the new apps are really cool*
From letters, newsletters, presentations, menus and more the templates are beautiful all you provide is the content and images.
10:26: Steve invites Phil Schiller on stage...
Phil, "good morning everyone. what I want to do is show you pages."
10:27: Pages opens and asks what kind of template you want to use or you can use a blank page. they are organized by newsletters, journals, menus, letters and more.
Opening document has images and place holder text and you can edit on the fly by clicking the text. All fonts and items are made to fit perfectly. iLife is integrated.
Editor: Adam is developing carpal tunnel at an amazing pace....
Using core image, Phil can resize photos and their hue on the fly before importing. Text aligns and resizes around the photo. Side note: these templates (only 40) will get old very fast till you can tell if they used pages to create the document.
10:31: Phil leaves stage and steve follows up with screenshots.
iWork will cost 79 dollars and be available January 22nd. Steve, "That's iWork."
Steve shows question, "Why doesnt apple offer a strip down mac?"

Mac mini!!!!!
10:33: "A new member of the Mac Family looks like a power brick w/ apple logo on top. Combo optical drive slot load.
Quiet, firewire, USB2, DVD and VGTA, Ethernet and modem
It is smaller than the mini in terms of height
"The Mac mini is BYO DKM" what does that mean? Bring your own display keyboard and mouse"
Powerbutton and kensington lock as well as peripherals on the back. The Macmini comes with OSX panther and iLife '05.
10:35: The pricing
1.25 GHZ, 40gb HD, combo for $499. Larger Hard drive and more features for $599. The most affordable mac ever. Box has handle and will be available January 22nd.
Box is the size of Steve's head.
10:37: Next, iTunes....
Steve, "iTunes has sold more than 230,000,000 million songs to date. Even more astounding, they are selling 1.25 million songs per day. 1.25 billion per year. the sales are at 70% market share.
10:40 : iPod...
"We are discontinuing the iPod today"

3 of 5 top products on Amazon were from Apple
"over 400 accessory products for your iPod."
Cars.....
Mercedes, BMW, Nissan, Volvo and Scion are offering iPod adapters on their new cars.
10:45: Another thing....
Cell Phones...
"We spoke about putting iTunes on Motorola and this is what it looks like" shows image.... "They roll out this spring".
one more thing....
"Let's look at iPod market share..."
iPod, 31%, flash 62%.
iPod is now 65% and flash is now 29%
What's next?
10:46: So we took a look at this market and there's a zillion flash players. There is little market share and the market is not growing. (steve dissing flash players).
10:58: "We don't want to make another one of these, but something great. Easier to use than existing iPods. We noodled for a while".
10:50: iPod users love to shuffle. We decided to base a flash based player around "Shuffle." today we are introducing the iPod Shuffle.
it is a lipstick looking thing with a little wheel. headphones in the top and smaller than a pack of Trident.
Weighs the same as four quarters (less than an ounce).
One button to play / pause, volume up / down, and previous / next song. LEDs signify feedback. You can Shuffle your music in a million different ways. Or by a switch in the back you can do first to last.
The iPod shuffle has a cap that uses USB2 and a 12 hour rechargable battery. It works with PC Mac. If you turn it upside down, we supply a neck lanyard. *steve holds up shuffle*.
10:51: Invented something new in iTunes for the iPod shuffle. Click "autofill" and it will pick songs at random and build a playlist to fit on your iPod shuffle.
You can use it as a USB storage device as well. There is an option in iTunes for how much you want for space and how much for music. "It is killer".
10:53: Two models, 512Mbs (120 songs) for $99!
2nd model has a gigabyte model is $149.

iPod Shuffle joins the members of our family, "iPod photo, iPod, iPod U2, and iPod Shuffle."
New TV Ad, .. rolls ad for iPod Shuffle.... *similar to silhouette ads but with iPod shuffle with variations of the shuffle icon and people breakdancing. "life is random"
Steve, "there may be some over at the new Apple store down the street. I want to thank the people from Apple for working so hard this past year."
11AM: "We have a real treat to end the presentation today."
John Mayer is up for two grammys for the song, "daughters". He will be performing that now. John is solo and starts playing.
11:01AM: The end of Macworld San Francisco 2005 keynote. We saw iWork, iLife, Mini Mac, and iPod shuffle. Almost all rumors came true and it was a great show. Mypersonalgetaway.com and its team have been planning this for three months and their hard work has really paid off.

yep it is all good now, we will have the full audio and photos up in minutes. we have three camera guys on the expo
