Griffin iBeam

Griffin had an amazing 2004. They sat on the top sellers list of Apple’s online store for their iTrip FM Transmitter for most of the year and when you see iPod, Griffin is next in line as maker of the best of accessories for the device. They have done things with the iPod you can’t imagine and a neat little device is the iBeam. An inexpensive product, the iBeam is a flashlight and laser combo for use with the iPod. iBeam works with all iPods with modified remote control port (3rd generation and above). It has two little bean shaped sticks that resemble an enema.

You remove the protective cap the top and plug it into your headphone / remote jack and on powers the light. The second enema is a red laser pointer. My first peeve is remembering which one is which. The flashlight is a little larger of a bean but there is not sigh which one it is unless you look closely at the output area to see what color it is (white or red). I would have liked to have “light” and “laser” printed in small letters down the side below “iBeam” to show me what I was about to plug into the iPod. I don’t want to sign my flashlight version up to a passing plane and accidentally plug in the laser. Think of the cost and penalty for causing an airplane to crash since Griffin did not label each device.

In terms of function and quality, it is great. Every product Griffin releases is great and this is no different. The brightness is pretty good considering you don’t need batteries and each light is held in a tine capsule no larger than the diameter of a quarter and the width of a calculator battery. I am worried since most kids have iPods and with the addition of a laser pointer, getting away with pointing at people at school (illegal in most districts) will be much easier. You can use your iPod and no one will know your MP3 player is causing the ruckus. The pointer can fit in a shoe and is easily concealed so teachers beware. Overall I like the product and at a low price, it will sell well as another extension of you iPod lifestyle.
