Griffin iTalk

July 29th: An early morning review. It is 12:21 AM and here is our review of the Griffin iTalk...

Griffin has become the leader for iPod accessories. Their iTalk FM transmitter for the iPod is often in the Top-10 of the Apple store. This means they are selling more iTrips than they are computers. The iTalk is a product released during Macworld San Francisco back in January. It started shipping in May and is great for students or professionals interested in recording lectures or long meetings and great for personal users that need to record notes and reminders. Of course, Belkin has a Voice Recorder but I did not like it and the iTalk kicks its butt. There are only two voice recorders for the iPod and the iTalk is the best one.

The iTalk is small and fits right in the iPodís footprint (on the top of course) to avoid being broken off or damaged. This also allows you to use most iPod cases using the iTalk. Setup is a cinch and the most difficult thing about the iTalk is removing the plastic wrap from the box. You plug the iTalk on the top of the iPod by removing your headphones first. You can plug your headphones in the top of the iTalk for audio pass-through. After plugging in the iTalk, it automatically changes to a voice memo screen. You can h it record and stop or start a new clip. It is that simple. Keep in mind when the iPod is recording the HD is spinning so it will use your battery up very quickly.
The iTalk records in 8bit audio and although it is not the best sound, it is great for voice and this is the max on recording in iPod software 2.1. There is not a company that can or will increase the bit rate of iPods so until Apple makes it more then we will just be recording voice. The best thing about the iTalk is its notebook level speaker. You can playback your recording and even music through it unless you have headphones plugged into the top; in that case the music will pass through to your headphones.
Getting memos off the iPod is simple as well. You just mount the iPod on your desktop and drag the icons to iTunes or wherever you choose to keep your notes. You can also delete the clips from the iPod when they are not needed anymore.
What you can do with the iTalk is amazing and when it comes to recording, let your imagination break free. You can try the Belkin Voice Recorder but its mic is of poor quality, the thing hangs off the iPod, there is no headphone jack on the recorder box and other issues I did not like. You can get your very own iTalk for all third generation iPods with Software version 2.1 or later at

Available at the The Think Different Store
