Radtech BT 500 Mouse
Apple now fully supports Bluetooth on its line of notebooks and desktops and with Bluetooth integration in Mac OS X, we have seen a load of peripherals that use Bluetooth as an alternative connection to your computer. For years, USB held the crown for mice and keyboards but now Bluetooth is the in standard for your connectivity. I have an Apple Wireless Mouse and it works well, in fact I see no difference in performance between that and my wired Apple Mouse except for the fact it is a lot heavier. Of course the options are low if you want a three button BT mouse and only a few companies are supporting Bluetooth and only a third of those work with Mac OS. A Bluetooth mouse that works well and is ultra compact is the BT 500 mouse from Radtech. The Mouse is only 89 millimeters in length but even with large hands it works fine and is comfortable. Of course, you can let your hand rest on the Apple mouse but Radtech did a good job on design with this product. More...

Rendevous for Windows and Linux/ Solaris Released
June 30th: Apple released a beta version of its "zero-config" networking protocal, Rendevous, for the more dominant Windows and Linux OSes. Solaris is also included in these releases. Rendevous is the driving force between many of Apple's applications like iTunes, iPhoto and iChat as well as Airport's 802.11g standard with Airtunes. The updates, we assume, are to make Airport Express work properly with Windows as well as Macintosh. Without Rendevous w/ 802.11, Airtunes w/ Airport Express ceases to funtion properly. Either way, the beta also allows Windows and Linux to find other computers and rendevous printers easily and with "zero-configuration" You can find out more and download the software for your Wintel box .

The Mac Web analyzes WWDC04 Keynote
June 30th: The news stories today across the Mac Web have a similarity. MacDailyNews has two reports. One, they Point Out jobs' hint of an August 31 (Paris Expo) release date for an updated iMac (possibly G5). The same website also pointed out Apple's DashBoard Website has Apple's stock price 10 points higher than today's and Microsoft's much lower making Apple and Pixar the leaders in stock prices over M$. MDN adds " Is this just a nice inside joke or a prediction of the future?" Finally, MacMerc Noticed the address book of one, Alan Smithee. It turns out Alan Smithee has a deeper meaning. MacSpy.net to Receive Makeover
June 29th: http://macspy.net/ will relaunch tonight at around 7PM. We don't know what to expect but it is supposed to bring us Spymac 4.00 users back to what Spymac used to be, a community. I don't know if MacSpy 4.0 will live up to the hype but we are all curious. Wait patiently when the Mac Web will never be the same.

Monster iCarPlay Wireless
Monster, the makers of the finest Audio, Video and Data cable today, has made an awesome new line of products for the iPod. One of which is the iCarplay Wireless. Basically, it is a cigarette lighter plug with the iPod's Dock Connecter on the other end with a little box in between. But, this simple device does something truly amazing and in the best way I have seen yet. This not only Charges your iPod off of your car battery but at the same time, transmits the audio from your iPod to your car. No need to go searching in your song list to find the right station and make your songs get pushed down the list by a bunch of station numbers which are complicated to work with. All you do is on the little box is press one button to scroll thru 88.1 FM all the way down to 89.7 FM. I found that every station worked. More...

Apple India CEO resigns
Apple India CEO Mahendran Balachandranhas has resigned after two and one-half years with the company, according to The Times of India: "Interestingly, in its decade-long presence in India, Apple has so far seen five country heads. Balachandran, a Tektronix veteran, had joined Apple in December 2001, succeeding Naresh Thappa who had a brief stint as its country manager. Last year, Apple broadened its base in the education segment and embarked on its retail journey by setting up the maiden Apple Centre in Bangalore. In education, it is targeting K12 (from kindergarten to 12th) students in addition to engineering colleges, fashion and multimedia institutes."

MacMice MicFlex
There are only a few microphones for the Macintosh. Of course, all of Apples computers have an included microphone except for their PowerMac G5 but the built-in mic is just for Apple to list it in their Tech Specs. To be honest with you, the built-in mic is one of the worst you can get and does not deliver great sound at 1 foot and almost non-existent sound at 20 feet. Macmice has created a microphone, inspired by its SightFlex and iFlex iSight holders, called MicFlex. MicFlex is a flower bud sized microphone at the end of an 18cm flexible cord. The cord has a USB cable running through it and into a dock. The best thing about the MicFlex is its ability to run with or without the base. Notebook users rejoice! Lets get into specifics. More...

iChat at 30k Feet
Its a long flight from Munich to San Francisco, even non-stop. But recently two enterprising Apple product managers cut the distance dramatically with a few at-hand tools: iChat AV, iSight, 17-inch PowerBook G4, a Boeing jet and an orbiting satellite.
I have always dreamed of an audio or video chat in an airplane or even using a Powerbook to go on the internet. Well these two men did what many have dreamed. Kurt Knight, in Cupertino, hooked up over iChat AV with Eric Zelenka and had a face to face Video chat. How?
Eric broadcast his availability for video chat with the custom status message Wireless at 35K Feet! says Knight. The signal for the video chat went through a Boeing 777 traveling at 500 mph through a satellite receiver in a 20,000 mile earth orbit.
The video quality was great and scaled well all the way up to full screen, says Knight. I think we made history as the first people to have an in-air video conference, not counting Air Force One or other ultra-expensive solutions. Very, very cool.
Like he said Very Cool!

ShuttleXpress
The Contour ShuttleXpress is nothing less than cool. It's software is perfect, the device is comfortable to use. And to think that having it sit on your desk wasn't cool enough, it actually does something. I use it for editing movies in iMovie and to play some games that require the mouse AND the keyboard which can be extreemely annoying. The ShuttleXpress takes care of it all. iTunes must be the coolest thing to use the ShuttleXpress with. I use the center wheel to scroll up and down the playlist and the outer one to control volume. The center button for play/pause and the two outer ones for previous/next track. More...

Macally Hub-UF
Macally's Hub-UF is the first Hub I have seen that not only incorporates the USB and the Firewire into one unit, but, it also features a cool little stand that allows you to stand it vertically or horizontally. It comes with a firewire cord as well as a USB cord to connect the hub to your machine. It is powered by the Bus or it can be also powered by the included power supply which I chose to use. The Hub is very light and I was able to tell that by the fact that the firewire cord included tends to topple over the entire unit, which is no big deal now that I have it mounted on by desk on the side for easy access. The LED's on the front illumiunate to tell you that it is receiving power. More...

Similar Apple Logo
A leather company called Guangdong Apples Industrial Co has registered a extremely similar logo as the Apple logo. The small difference is that the Chinese logo is a full apple and the Mac logo has a bite taken out of it. The Mac company has lost its appeal to extend the tradmark to cover clothes and such. Too bad for Mac but as long it keeps on pumping its software out, its okay for me.

Lapvantage Notebook Stand
I have reviewed notebook stands in the past but this is the most well designed. It has one of the highest price tags but I would buy nothing less for my Mac. So far my favorite stand was Griffins iCurve but it is a simple design and does not allow for adjustment of the height, or support the cables coming out of my ports. Thats right, when you have a new iBook or Powerbook, the cables are on the side and with them just hanging down with no support, it causes stress on the ports. Well Lapvantage has made using my iBook more ergonomic, useable, cooler and better on my peripherals. More...

Waterfield Designs' iPod Case
Waterfield Designs is one of my favorite case companies. All of their products show symmetry, style and find function / use in each aspect of their designs. The iPod Case from Waterfield did not fall far from the tree, but it seems like the fall may have taken some of the Waterfield out of the case. Let me elaborate. The checkerboard look is of less quality than their other cases, there are a few non-symmetrical imperfections that have use but dont look well and the Velcro used can start to give out after just a few months of using the case. There are good points. One is a slightly open top area to make using any size headphones plug and remote easy. There is also a really open front window after lifting the flap that allows for you to see the entire iPod face. When using other cases you may have to slide the iPod around to get the iPod to match with the plastic buttons or screen window. More...

Opinion: Nerds and hot girls
Nerds and women. For the most part, these two groups of people often lie at far ends of the social spectrum. Most sterotypes label the typical nerd as someone who lives in thier parents basement, only ever venturing to the light for more video games and cheese puffs. This, however, has begun to change. More and more of my female-friends have shown interest in those on the geekier side of my life, for good reason.
Most people have seen what happens to people after high school. The star football player, and the most popular kid on the block end up working blue collar jobs. Conversly, the out casts and nerds land higher paying jobs in technical feilds. People like Bill Gates, once looked down upon by many of his peers, claims a spot on the 'richest man in the world' list.
As the need for network techs and computer programmers expands, the need for the proverbial nerds also expands. People see the light shine thorugh the social awkwardness and see that nerds are people too.

Wacom Graphire3 6x8
The Wacom Graphire3 6x8 was so easy to set up that I had it up and running in 5 minutes. Inkwell worked perfectly with it. I was amazed that the mouse and the Stylus required no batteries. How Wacom pulled that off I have no clue. They included software, Procreate Painter Classic, Adobe Photoshop Elements 1.0, and penPalette LE. However, much to my suprise, only Painter Classic was made for Mac OS X. The other two only worked with Mac OS 9. The Control panel which had the controls in it to work the tablet needed to restart the computer to recognize the tablet. The good thing is that I only had to restart once. After that restart, whenever I plugged in the Tablet, it recognized the device. More...

UK News: iPod mini coming soon
The release of iPod mini internationally is drawing closer, with rumors that production of the hard drives have now been increased. Apple still maintains that July will be month when we can get our hands of these little devices, lets hope Apple does get it right with the price and delivery times (4-6 weeks will prove unpopular). Apple may claim to be the market leader but in the UKt there is a more of a competitive market and people will turn to alternatives.
It is widely known that Apple often stock has surplus stock of hardware to satisfy its US market, which analysts in the UK in believe damages Apples ability to increase its market share as the built times are often unacceptable.

Ronald Reagan's World Tour
Our 40th President Ronald Reagan passed away on Sunday, June the 6th; yet his burial service was at sunset on the 11th. What took so long? Apple Quietly Changes its DRM
It looks like Apple made some changes to its DRM (Digital Rights Management) policies used by their iTunes Music Store this week. Of course yesterday, June 15th, they introduce localized versions of iTunes for the UK, France and Germany. Well after accessing the store to get the free song of the week, I tried to play one of my 200 purchased songs and I get an error, You are not authorized to play this song purchased by I checked my authorization, de-authorized my computer and did it again but I got the same error. Now, I dont keep my songs in the protected AAC format. I like to have flexibility so I use Fairplay or Hymm to strip the DRM from my music. I have used this software for the longest time now. I dont give the music to other people or am a pirate I just like to have more flexibility with my music like the ability to play it in other players or mess with the songs to make remixes. I will tell you now, I have never given purchased music to others and never will. More...

Fox Channel's Summer Lineup Pt. 1
Well, the summer programs on Fox have started and it looks like they dont have much to offer. The first new show is North Shore and after watching just five minutes of it I cant help but see an effort to copy the hugely successful The OC which is Foxs only moneymaker behind American Idol. Apple and Home Electronics
With the release of iPod, iTunes, and the Airport Express w/ AirTunes it seems like Apple is slowly entering the market where Phillips and Sony dominate; thats right, home electronics. Sony and Phillips make DVD players, CD players, headphones, stereos, and other devices that converge people with digital content. Apple is pulling their usual strategy and just stepping in the water but not jumping in, but you can tell they are trying to steal market share from these larger companies slowly with their Digital Hub strategy.

First sighting of McDonald/ Sony Promo
June 8th: Today I went to get breakfast at McDonalds when I saw a sign, "Buy a Big Mac Meal and get a free music download". Reading the small print showed it was a song from Sony's "Connect" music download service. At this time, this only works with PCs. When you look at the first few months of iTMS downloads when it was Mac only they were upwards of the millions. It is kind of stupid for McDonalds to choose a service that only caters to the windows platform. Of course, what Mac user would buy from Sony's store anyway? In business, they should not isolate their market when there is a possibility that the other side may purchase a Big Mac to get a song as well. It would have been better for McDonalds to choose Apple in this promotion and I am sure they tried Apple's service first, but something went awry in the negotiations because McDonalds had to settle for second best.

7 days until iTunes Europe launches

According to Reuters and about a dozen other sites Apple "will announce its long-awaited European version of the iTunes online music store," based on a telling press invitation released earlier today. Using its usual motto, the release simply said, "The biggest story in music is about to get even bigger." The event is scheduled to take place on June 15 at 11 a.m. at Old Billingsdale Market in London.
The European download fray already includes offerings from Coca-Cola and Napster, and Sony recently announced it would launch Connect overseas by the end of June.

Apple should use Safari to drive Web standards
Apple should leverage Safari to drive development of a standards based web, according to The Sydney Morning Herald: "Apple, along with KHTML, Opera and Mozilla, may have two or three years to innovate on the browser front, without any competition from Microsoft. And Apple might just have found the killer app to drive people to adopt a new, lightweight, fast, open source based, standards-compliant multi-platform browser - mainstream commercial online music. We can only hope to see Safari for Windows, and maybe other platforms. And with it thriving browser innovation based on the open standards of the World Wide web." Meanwhile, a review of Mac browsers says the Safari still leads the pack unless you need specific features offered by others.

Mac OS X 10.3.4 implements several security enhancements, Apple claims.
Reports from security experts Secunia and Security Tracker both offer Apple's claims that the update repairs an "issue in NFS (Network File System) logging when tracing system calls". Other updates include, fixes to an unspecified error within the Login Window when handling directory services look-ups and console log files; a fix for an unspecified error within Packaging during package installation; repair to an unspecified error within the TCP/IP stack implementation when handling out-of-sequence TCP packets; a fix for an unspecified error within AppleFileServer when using SSH and reporting errors; and reparation of an unspecified error within Terminal when handling URLs.
