iTunes 4.5 Rant

There are two things that have not been changed since the first two version of iTunes. This is not a rant just an open call to Apple to add two features I have requested for the longest time. For one, the iTunes visualizer has not been changed since version 2. I was hoping to see a visualizer manager and SDK for developers as well as more visuals in iTunes 3. Instead there have been three major updates and yet no visualizer. I would had done without Party Shuffle if I could have had another visualizer. Sure, there are others out there but they suck. Apple makes the best ones so we want more. More...

Another Apple Update iMovie 4.01

Apple has been busy and has release iMovie 4.01 update.

iMovie 4.0.1 includes improved performance and reliability for iMovie 4.
This update provides increased performance when working with large projects, such as editing video clips and audio volume. iMovie 4.0.1 provides increased reliability when the application opens, when titles are added to the timeline, and with 3rd party plug-ins that are removed or no longer available to an iMovie project (for example, when you open a project on a different computer). Other improvements include fixes for pixelated video, corrupted Ken Burns clips, and loss of audio, which could occur after editing video or audio and then emptying the trash.

Apple releases iTunes 4.5, offers new iTMS features

Today Apple released iTunes 4.5, which includes several new features, many of which tie into the new iTunes Music Store. iTunes 4.5 allows users post and share their iMixes and rate other people's iMixes, watch music videos and movie trailers, and save Store previews for purchase later. Additionally the iTunes Music Store terms of use have been modified -- playlists with purchased songs can be burned seven times now, down from ten before they need to be altered, but up to five computers can play purchased music, up from three. Tracks can still be burned an unlimited number of times and copied to as many iPods as you like. Other features of iTunes 4.5 include a new Party Shuffle feature that dynamically creates playlists, the ability to print CD inserts, convert unprotected WMA files to AAC, and a new Apple Lossless encoder for importing music without any loss in sound quality.

Griffin Powerwave

The Griffin PowerWave is full of features that separate it from some of the other USB audio devices on the market. To start with, it includes a 20-watt per-channel amplifier and comes with Prospeaker Breakout Cable, so you can connect standard stereo speakers - not the cheap powered kind hooked up to many Macs - directly to the unit and get wonderful sound. You can also connect Apple's Pro Speakers to the PowerWave, since Griffin uses the same connector on the PowerWave that Apple uses on select iMacs and desktop Macs. (And since the PowerWave is self-powered, any audio device hooked to it -- such as an iPod -- will play through the speakers, even if your Mac is shut down.) More...

MPG Welcomes Matt Jackson

April 26th: The MPG family is proud to announce the addition of a new writer. We have been searching far and wide for an individual that respects companies and their way of doing things. We also wanted to find a person that is dedicated to the Mac platform and shows enthusiasm for all things Mac. Matt Jackson lives in St. Augustine, FL where the owner, Adam and "This old Mac" writer, John Regan live. The three are a key part to MPG and all we need now is a robot to clean house and do dishes and we will be "the super friends"! Ok, so I got a little distracted, but you all get the point. WELCOME MATT!

*this is not to be confused with Matthew Wanderer, one of our other writers.*

Tunes Music Store at one

With the iTunes Music Store celebrating its first birthday on Wednesday, CNET takes a look at the online music business and the giant transformation it has undergone since Apple's launch. Of note: some labels have started charging more for both singles and albums, although to date services have only passed on the higher charges to consumers who purchase albums; Walmart.com's 88-cent music store has come the closet to duplicating Apple's success, with the store garnering about half as many customers as iTunes had in March; and Apple's competitors continue to believe that Apple's closed approach to the iPod/iTunes will be what unseats both from their dominant positions, while the music industry itself would like to see more interoperability between all services and devices.

Waterfield Designs' SleeveCase

Some notebook users don’t need to carry their power adapter and their entire office with them. Maybe you are just going to the coffee shop or you go to work and have the appropriate items to run your computer waiting for you. So I guess you don’t need to spend 150 dollars on a large bag with tons of pockets. You just want a case that can hold your notebook and keep it safe. I think you need a notebook sleeve. There are many choices, like many other products, but only one I have seen has features no other has. There are other sleeves from Marware and Radtech that just hold your computer with a zipper or buckle. These are great and have their own unique features, but the SleeveCase from WaterField Designs has some things no other bag has. More...

Road Tools' Cool Pads

Road Tools Podium CoolPad (At-Home Use)

The Podium CoolPad is a notebook riser that sits on your desk. It rises your notebook to an ergonomic level and allows for heat dissipation. The other feature that no other stand has it its ability to pivot 360 degrees so you can move it with you or turn it for others to see. The name CoolPad means just that. Apple’s notebooks are blazingly hot and the CoolPad keeps them cool by allowing cool air to flow under the computer via natural convection. This also allows the computer to be closer to eye level so you can view the monitor without looking down thus causing stress on your neck and spine. More...

Radtech ScreensaverZ

I am a notebook owner that carries his everywhere. I have the same problem as most users; oil and dirt from my keyboard get on my iBook screen and dirt gets down in the keys. Radtech came to the rescue. Their Screensavrz are made of their patented Optex and cover the entire keyboard. The material is thin and even washable so it is great for users on the go.
After a few days of using the product, I don't know how I lived without it. It was a little difficult to get used to taking the thing on and off of the keyboard. It just sits over it but still took a little more time to get used to. I did save a lot of time by not having to clean my monitor daily or purchase those expensive compressed air canisters for cleaning the dirt out of the keyboard.
If you use your notebook everywhere and have dirty hands, I suggest checking out the ScreenSaverz and try out one for yourself.

eMac pricing glitch leads to deluge of orders

A Japanese company says it was deluged with thousands of orders for multiple eMac PCs this week after a glitch caused the computers to be listed on an online shopping site for the knock-down price of $25, according to PC World: "Catena says it received orders from around 20,000 people for a total of 100 million of the computers, but in a message on its Web site says it won't be able to fulfill the orders. The company says a code number assigned to a set of five 8X DVD-R discs, which were the products it was intending to sell, was sent to Yahoo Japan on Wednesday afternoon."

iBook G4 Superdrive offer changes

April 23rd: Earlier this week, Apple introduced a 14 inch iBook with a "built-to-order" option to have a DVD burning superdrive. It seems that the offer has risen in price. Shaun Jackson Design: LapTrap

If you are searching for your notebook, it is a living hell. Let’s be honest there are cases of all sizes, shapes, colors and functions. Some developers think you can make a padded pocket and sew in a bunch of pockets with a Velcro flap and you have a notebook case. Well, this is not the “case” (I could not help myself). If you do your computing everywhere, school, home, park, beach, I could go on and on then you need a different kind of case. You want to take your desk with you. You load your notebook bag full of gear then take it all out, and put it on your lap. What kind of work is that? Poor ergonomics, a hot laptop, and you have no place to use your mouse. More...

Trendy Geek: Pod Shield

There are so many cases for the iPod. There are cases to keep water, dirt and other materials away from it. There are also cases that protect it from everyday drops or just plain look nice. What if you just want to keep it scratch free? Heck, some cases scratch your iPod when taking it in and out. Not deep scratches but surface scratches from the materials in the case. It would be nice to have an inexpensive and simple solution to wear and tear on your iPod.

iPod 15 and iPod 15 Compared!

Although this title makes absolutely no sense, to an Apple technician or specialist there are many differences between the Apple iPod released on Apri 28th 2003 and the iPod released January 5th 2004. Both are 15gbs, both can have the curren iPod software (2.1), but their hardware differences are amazing. First I have to start with the backlight. The iPod backlight is finally blue. It was always blue in the commercials. The new 15gb iPod has a blue backlight and it is brighter than ever. Also, the screen is amazingly crisp. If you have the old and new iPod beside eachother you can see an obvious difference. When I turn the iPod around, the Apple logo is brighter as well as the rest of the text. Finally, the buttons feel harder and a lot more responsive. I was amazed of how great the new iPod worked. The differences are not huge enough to warrant the cost of a new iPod, but if you don't own an iPod, you should take another look at these. 15 gigabytes holds 5500 songs and is only 299 now.

Logitech Cordless Mouseman

I had fun playing around with the endless customizable features of the Logitech Cordless Mouseman. It felt comfortable in my hand and performed just as well as it looked and felt. The scroll wheel also very much came in handy when browsing the web and viewing long documents. I loved the Mouseman’s Back and Forward browser buttons. This had me hooked on using the Back and Forward buttons convient located on the side of the Mouseman instead of moving all the way up to the top-right corner of my browser to press “Back.” Button.

OS X 10.3.4 in development

Apple this week seeded the first pre-release build of Mac OS X 10.3.4.

In a seed note, Apple said Version 10.3.4 should provide a performance gain when launching non-prebound applications. In addition, the update includes several changes that may affect device compatibility, specifically, TWAIN scanners, USB Flash Media, SCSI drives, iPods, and some PCMCIA cards. The update also reportedly incorporates updates relating to Audio FireWire and USB 2.0 connectivity for the iPod.

Version 10.3.4 also includes changes to Core Audio, OpenGL, Graphics, Core OS, and the High Level Toolbox, Apple told developers.

Apple also specified several known issues with the latest build involving Quartz Extreme and DVD playback, Safari table rendering, redraw problems, display resolutions, and System Profiler.

Logitech X-620

The Logitech X-620 obviously had a lot of thought put into it. From the design to the blue LED
Power Indicator. I opened the box and found not one but two stories of speakers all neatly packed into this box. I rushed to open all these speakers and mounted them on my wall. As in 3 behind me, one on either side of my iBook and one above me. Also, the sunwoofer was under my desk.
Wired the system up and had to add a cord to make the speaker's cables behind me reach all the way to the subwoofer under my desk. The sound was amazing. More...

UPDATED: Apple Bumps iBook Models w/ Superdrive

April 20th: Apple today announced new iBook configurations, sticking to its three model format – one 12-inch and two 14-inch incarnations – and topping off its low-end model with a 1 GHz G4 processor while sticking to its aggressive $1099 price point. Additionally, a $200 SuperDrive is now available as a BTO option on the 14-inch iBook.

12-inch
1 GHz, 256MB RAM; ATI Mobility 9200; 30 GB HD; Combo Drive: $1099

14-inch
1 GHz; 256MB RAM; ATI Mobility 9200; 40 GB HD; Combo Drive: $1299
1.2 GHz; 256MB RAM; ATI Mobility 9200; 60 GB HD; Combo Drive: $1499

All iBook configurations are available for immediate purchase.

This news taken from Spymac

You can purchase your own at or find out mor info at .

UPDATE: Another thing we noted while ordering one of the new iBooks for a test machine was the fact that you can get up to 1.25Gbs of ram now. Before, you could only max out the iBook ram at 640Mbs. Many people in the know would order the minimum ram, then spend 500 bucks and order the 1gb chip from an outside vendor. It is great to see that much ram in the consumer level notebook. Sadly the Vram is the same as previous iBooks. This is to not compete with the Powerbook line.

Apple Unveils Faster Powerbooks!

April 19th: This is huge news. Apple has finally updated their powerbook line. The speeds are incredible, the price is great, and they all have the charicteristics of powerbooks. Remember when the 12" powerbook was just a speedbumped iBook? Well, the 12" has 64mbs of Vram in a Go5200 graphics card, a 1.33 GHZ G4 processor, but sadly still no firewire 800 after a year of being put in the 17" powerbook. The other two of Apple's pro portables got a bump as well. The 17" and 15" powerbooks have speeds starting at 1.33 Ghz up to 1.5 Ghz. They each have 512K of level 2 cache like before but come with a 4x superdrive. This is double the speed as before. The top two models also have ATI 9700 graphics cards.
The Powerbook family has finally seperated from the iBooks and has specs to blow any other PC laptop out of the water. I would take the porability of the powerbook over the G5 anyday, and with these speeds we have the powerto run Apple's latest offerings of Final Cut HD and Apple Motion 1.0.

Find Out more about the , or one today.

Review: Timbuk2 Commute Laptop bag

When it comes to messenger bags the first name you think of is Timbuk2 they are the leading manufacturer of messenger bags and have been for many years. What most people don't know about timbuk2 is that they also produce high quality laptop bags. When designing these bags they took from the basic concepts of their messenger bags; keeping contents safe and protected from the environment, and making sure it’s actually comfortable to carry unlike some bags out there. UK News: Apple UK store coming . . . .

With Apple re-confirming the UK store I thought I'd see how its coming along. Well the BBC did have live jam cam which clearly showed the building in the background, but the camera has now been repositioned ever so slightly, bah you can no-longer see the proposed site. Steve really does want to keep it a secret.

I wonder if the flagship European UK store opening will also correspond with the European iTunes music store online?

John King says Apple Store SF is a "windowless box"

April 15th: John King of the San Francisco Chronicle says in his article, calls the Apple Store in downtown SF a cube. He goes on talking about the Apple store sticks out in "one of the nation's last vibrant retail district.". Mr. King says apple, "creativity dropped a windowless box two blocks from Union Square?" This is how I feel about it. Apple is using the look of its products. I think the store is beautiful and the metal building with glowing Apple logo has a great style in that district. If you walk around downtown SF, you see old building over one hundred years old, but right next door there is the Fossil, louie vuitton, and Gucci company stores that share a futuristic look juset like the Apple store. Honestly, all of the stores in Union Square do not look classic at all. I don't know what John King was speaking of, but he obviously thinks the Apple store needs windows. Apple should release a press release claiming they have installed VirtualPC on all of their machines, and now they have a box full of windows. Take that Mr. King

iSkin ProTouch PB

As a notebook user, I face a lot of challenges. Portability is the best aspect of owning a notebook, but there are problems that occur when using the stylish beast all day while at school or work. One problem is the keyboard. My fingerprints easily get transferred from my keyboard to the LCD display when I close the lid, and my keys wear out over time and get extremely dirty. Only a month after getting your notebook, dirt and dust gets down in the keys. Powerbook owners can’t remove their keyboards on the latest PowerBooks, so that makes an even worse problem for them. iPod mini Flaw discovered

April 13th: The mini MP3 player that could do no wrong has shown us its true colors. It seems as though the iPod mini outputs crackling sounds from its heaphone jack after use. iPod lounge reports the problem may be a black connector coming loose during use and thus causing the sounds issues. The problem is occouring with users that plug and unplug their headphones on a constant basis. Apple has recieved only a few complaints and the iPod mini is still covered under the one year warranty, so if the problem arrises in your mini, simply call Apple at 18002752273, and they will fix the problem.

Apple Updates eMac to 1.25Ghz

April 13th: Apple updated the eMac line of computers across the line. All models have speeds up to 1.25Ghz. Other changes are updating from the graphics engine from Radeon 7500 to Radeon 9200 with 32mbs of Vram. The system bus was updated from 133Mhz to 167Mhz. The Superdrive went from a 4x burner to an 8x burner. These are natural speed bumps and enhancements. Overall, this eMac should be a lot faster. With the ram being faster as well, it looks like the new eMac has comparable specs of the current Powerbook line. If you look at the 15" ALbook, compared to this eMac line, you will see many similarities. The best thing about this update is The top of the line eMac with 1.25Ghz, superdrive, 80gb HD, and other great features is only $999! That is amazing. If you think about it, I payed $1799 for a 17" iMac back in December for the exact same features. Although this is an eMac, that price comparison for the same power is amazing.
Honestly, Apple did not have to work to hard to make this update come to life. It was just adding more stuff in the same eMac package. There may be more changes and we will investigate further.
All this update does is put a stop to the arguement that Apple has not updated their hardware in months. We have new eMacs so shut the F**K up! Apple will inroduce new products when they are ready.

My Experience with Windows xp

I was without my iBook G4 for a few days last week, and of course my TiBook has no internet capabilities at all, so I was forced to go to a public library and use Windows XP w/ Office xp. Most of you are probably cringing right about now. I was going to be there for a while, so I set up prefs, added my email accounts to Outlook xp, and customized internet explorer to work like I wanted it to. After getting used to the command key not being beside the space bar but instead I had to use the ctrl key, I was doing pretty well with the beast. Of course I had to turn off the blue “fisher-price” version of the OS and revert to classic windows look. More...

Movie: Hellboy

Another comic book hero comes to life in the story of Hellboy played by Ron Perlman. This ultra powerful fire retardant being from outer space is kept secret by the government to fight off other “freaks”. The only thing that keeps him wanting to live is his love for the fire starter girl played by Selma Blair (Cruel Intentions). When Hellboy’s finder feels his life ending soon, he calls on a young FBI agent to look over the beast.
Their relationship is rocky but the young blood makes friends with Hellboy as they, a man-like amphibian and the fire starter have to join forces to save the world from a crazed Nazi (literally) that wants to open a portal and bring horrible beasts to Earth. The movie is a little over two hours long. Hellboy has a lot of action and a few comedic moments. Although Selma Blair is not hot enough to be a “fire starter”, the flick is a three out of five on my scale. If you like action but are tired of comic book rip-offs, I suggest waiting for Hellboy to come to video in a few months.

America has certainly had a long history filled with tragedies, accomplishments, and power. From the very beginning of our history it seems like we have been hypocrites. Advertising and the Role it Plays

Advertising is a key part of any business. How can someone purchase your product or service without knowing about it? Advertising is everywhere. Radio, TV, roadsides, the Internet, and even a logo on someone’s T-shirt all qualify as advertising. What makes it work though? What about that ad compels you to purchase the product? On TV, a company has 30 seconds to make you want their product. Even if you didn’t know you wanted it. There is a key word here, “you”. It is you they are targeting. Well, not always. If you are a male, they might be targeting your wife, or you kid. No 40 year old male will watch a twenty foot giraffe talk about Power Rangers and want to go to Toys’R’Us (well not most). If you sit a five year old kid in front of the same commercial, well that is a different story. On the other hand, show people snowboarding and surfing while drinking Mountain Dew, and that guy facing a mid-life crisis, may go after the Mountain Dew. See how it works? Of course you do. Let’s assume you know how advertising works. We won’t need to go back to this subject. More...

Transitions: Boyhood to Manhood

For thousands of years, different civilizations have required a “rites of passage” type of ceremony or act. Even today, some Native American tribes require their young men to go out in the woods without food and survive until they have a vision and see their animal. All over the world, there are civilizations that still do these acts. Yet, in the US we do not have this type of thing. I think all we have is you get to drive when you are 16, can smoke and go clubbing when you are 18, and can drink and go to any strip club when you are 21. I know the laws may be different in your state, but regardless, this is it for us. There is not a ceremony or act that makes you a man. More...

ACME MADE Slim 15" Powerbook Case

Mac users know that style matters. Half of the joy of owning a Mac is it looks so darn sexy. Some of like cases that match our computers. This is where ACME Made comes in. Acme Made is based out of San Francisco and has bags for the style savvy Mac User. Their tote bags or cases for all sizes of Apple’s notebooks and even sleeves for the Flat Panel iMac. I received the bright orange notebook sleeve totebag from them in a 15” configuration. It was the coolest bag ever. I t was not good on storage, but if you are carrying just your notebook, Acme Made” made a great bag for just that.
The exterior of the bag has two leather reinforced handles in the center. There is also an included stretchy shoulder pad. You can get the cases in a variety of colors and sizes, and they all feel great. The outside of the case is a rough material that feels scratch resistant and even waterproof. Of course, I don’t suggest taking your Powerbook for a dip, but at least the quality of this bag ad a little security if you are in the rain. The zippers in the computer area and on the back inset pocket are triple sealed zippers that are solid and really a joy to use. It may sound weird but just the zippers made you feel like your Powerbook is there to stay. More...

Timbuktu Pro Multiplatform

Timbuktu must be the coolest app that supports the dark side. Basically, it's Apple Remote Desktop
on Steroids. All I did was installed it on both my iBook and my Gateway and my mac found my PC
instantaly. Seconds later, I was able to connect to and control my PC from my mac upstairs via my
Wireless Airport Network. I wasn't expecting Netopia to be this easy to use. I controlled the cursor, ran applications, used the Intercom feature for talking to my sister down on the pc live. This app is simply amazing. Also, I was able to use the PC to control my Mac as well. The only complaint I had was the fact that there is no simple solution for Macs to print to Windows Shared Printers.

I loved this App and will be using it often at my house.

UK Sunday Fun

Happy Easter you all, well on this easter day it is a big day Newcastle Untied face the current premiership leaders Arsenal, and let hope we stuff em.

Well I've spent a few hours this morning fighting a hangover, and what better way than to amuse myself, than browse the net and I'd thought I'd share a few interesting finds.

Kids and Computers: Is School the Right Place?

Mac users and Apple investors are happy to hear Apple notebooks being put in the hands of school kids. This means more money for Apple, and more Mac users in the long run. Those are great reasons for Apple to push the education market and try to get iBooks to all of the school kids around the world, but in most cases, kids abuse that privilege; especially when wi-fi internet access is in the mix. Most of our staff is teenagers and half of them have notebooks at school. More...

MemoriX

MnemoniX is an addictive tile-matching game (much like Memory)
With awesome sound effects and a Mac OS X Aqua touch.
Just launching MnemoniX gets you started offering you tips on how to play the game effectively. There are also cool options available that allow you to change what the top of the tiles look like, a load of game types, and even includes 8 awesome themes that allow you to completely customize the game the way you want it. As well as 8 different game variants. IllumineX even went as far as to animating the Application icon in the dock when the game is launched. Overall this game was addicting and I played it for about two hours until I had to break away. I recommend this game to anyone who is looking for a challenge.

Virus News: Trojan on Mac OS X

Intego the security specialists have announced the first Mac OS X Trojan Horse: MP3Concept

This Trojan horse, MP3Concept (MP3Virus.Gen), exploits a weakness in Mac OS X where applications can appear to be other types of files.

The Trojan horse's code is encapsulated in the ID3 tag of an MP3 (digital music) file. This code is in reality a hidden application that can run on any Macintosh computer running Mac OS X.

Bill knocked off top spot

The Swedish founder of the IKEA furniture chain has passed Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates as the world's richest person, according to reports out of Sweden. Business weekly Veckans Affarer is set to report that Kamprad holds a fortune of 400 billion crowns or $53 billion. This would put him $6 billion ahead of Gates.

The poor showing of dollar may have something to do with this.

Apple extends deadline for redeeming Pepsi song codes

Apple has extended the deadline for redeeming winning codes found on Pepsi bottles in its Pepsi-iTunes giveaway--past the "Official Rules" deadline of March 31, 2004. Some of our writers have noted that users have been successfully able to enter codes today, one day past the official 3/31/04 deadline, while others say that Apple will allow users to redeem free song codes until the official promo ends on April 30th. All unused song credits will be void after April 30, 2004.

Updated: MPG Closes its doors!!!

UPDATED: APRIL FOOLS!

We loved messing with you. We got over 25 emails asking us to open up our doors and actually sold some merchandise. As much as we enjoyed your last minute supports, and someone decided to click our google ad 200 times( although too many clicks from one IP and google does not pay at all). It was fun, and we are still going strong. Site traffic is up to an all time high and the visitor record is broken each day. Happy April Fools. We want to know how many times you were tricked today. I was tricked 4 times. Enjoy and take care.

April 1st: We are sad to say, MPG is closing shop. We have enjoyed bringing news, articles, and other fun things to you. It has only been a project of Adam Jackson and friends. The site will stay up for archival purposes, but we will not be posting anything else. The forums are dead as of 12AM and all members will be dumped so no posting is allowed. If you have an comments, feel free to send them to .

We Will Miss You All!
